Thousands of people gathered together in Ormskirk town centre for the borough’s Freedom of West Lancashire celebrations.

The celebration was to honour the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, including its first casualties, lost in Afghanistan in 2009.

Soldiers from the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion, together with the King’s Division Band marched from the Council offices to the Parish Church for the presentation of a scroll to Brigadier Mike Griffiths CBE by the Mayor.

The parade then marched through the town centre to the cheers of thousands of local people and ex-servicemen, as well as friends and family.

A1TM worked closely with West Lancashire Borough Council and Lancashire Police on ensuring safe and happy event. A1TM facilitated the town centre road closures to allow the parade, and assisted the police in creating temporary road blocks in highly traffic-sensitive areas, while the parade marched through the town centre. The aim was to create a safe and enjoyable environment whilst minimising disruption.

Organisers were overjoyed to see attendance almost double from last year’s first pride event in Liverpool, with 35,000 attending the main Pier Head festival site and a further 5,000 visiting the Stanley Street events.

The event started with a march through the city centre, where onlookers watched 2,500 people flow through the city in a blaze of sound and colour. The march was lead by members of murdered teenager Michael Causer’s family, and numerous organisations including Merseytravel, Homes for Everyone, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and UNISON North West, were represented, together with local clubs and bars.

A1 Traffic Management were appointed for the second year to plan and facilitate the traffic control and road closures for the march and festival. The march required a highly co-ordinated programme of road closures to ensure the city centre march route was clear of traffic. Five A1 teams worked simultaneously to ensure the route was closed for the minimum amount of time and that marchers could safely travel across the city.

A1TM were supported by Merseyside Police in the temporary closure of The Strand, Liverpool’s busiest road, to allow 2,500 marchers cross safely to the event site. The Strand was closed for a mere 11 minutes.

Pride goers went on to enjoy a host of entertainment across two stages at the Pier Head, ending with a dramatic balloon release. Stanley Street events were well supported and went on into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Tommy McIlravey, Chair of Liverpool Pride said: ‘It was an absolutely brilliant day, everything went to plan and we were even blessed with good weather. We didn’t think anything could top last year’s event but this surpassed our wildest dreams….Having the festival at the Pier Head in front of the Liver Building proved a huge success and we’ve had fantastic feedback about the festival site….everyone who came along really enjoyed themselves.’
